Planet v/s Plastic: Earth Day Celebrations at LVIS
I am the Earth, and the Earth is me.
Each blade of grass, each honey tree,
Each bit of mud, and stick and stone
Is blood and muscle,
Skin and bone.
- Jane Yolen
The proceedings of the day began with the Director-Principal, Ms. Anita Malhotra, administering the pledge to all the members of the Lotus Valley family, focusing on becoming champions for the greater good of the planet. She also enunciated the importance of celebrating each day as Earth Day and urged all to mark the Earth Hour with their family by having a ‘candle light dinner’. The school also carried out a ritual “Switch to Enrich”, wherein, lights were switched off from 8:00-9:00 a.m. to enrich the environment.
Keeping the theme of this year, “Planet v/s Plastic” in mind, the school has installed a “Plastic Waste Bin” in collaboration with IPCA organisation to propagate the idea of ‘reuse and recycle’. The day also saw learners across grades embrace the theme of the day with great enthusiasm by engaging in thoughtfully designed activities ranging from charting the life cycle of plastic and making graffiti to becoming an activist for a day and participating in quiz competitions. The activities provided an enjoyable platform for students to creatively articulate their perspectives on environmental stewardship and ensured that the day becomes an integral part of the everyday life of each Lotusian.
